The Girls travelled across the M50 to Ballinteer, knowing a win would put us into a championship semi final. The opening few minutes was a tight contest as both teams battled for the first score which eventually was scored by the Geese half forward, Orlaith Prendeville.
The home side then took the lead with a well taken goal. Geese corner forward, Niamh Redmond, was proving to be a handful for the Ballinteer's corner back, which resulted in a number of frees - which Orlaith pointed to close the gap. Ballinteer again put our defence to the test but the Geese' back line stood tall and the sliotar was eventually cleared by Meabh Browne.
Ballinteer extended their lead with a point from a free. The following puck out resulted in our best passage of play - Meabh found Orlaith with the puck out, which she laid off to the onrushing Nicole Harford, who delivered a great ball into the Niamh Mulvany. Quick thinking from Niamh resulted in our first goal which was converted by Orlaith. The scorching conditions saw the reintroduction of the water break.
Geese started the strongest after the water break, with Orlaith pointing from a free and again shortly after finding the back of the net. Two well taken frees from Ballinteer closed the gap yet again but it was the Geese who went into the half- time break in front 2-3 to 1-3.
From the restart we extended our lead when Blathnaid Ni Scanaill passed to her sister Siofra who went on a run up the wing and delivered a pin point pass to Niamh Mulvany to slot over for our first score of the second half. The home side tried to get back into the game but could not break our half back line of Sarah Willis, Rachael Doody and Nicole Harford. The midfield duo of Alannah and Blathnaid never stopped running, covering every blade of the grass. As we emptied the bench there was let up of pressure on the Ballinteer back line, and it wasn't long until Geese got their third goal of the game from Béibhín Flatley. This was followed up quickly with a point from Carla Fay. Again, the home side tried to get back into the game but our full back line were more than up to the test.
As we entered the final quarter we applied even more pressure and that was rewarded with a brilliant finish by Niamh Redmond, who sharply reacted to the breaking ball and netted for our fourth goal of the game. The game ended 4-5 to 1-4 and booked the girls a spot in the semi-final.
